As a young adult, sometimes it can feel like you fall into a sort of "gap" in the church. But this does not have to be the case at all. Perhaps you want to get involved in Youth Ministry since it wasn't long ago that you were considered a youth yourself. You are always welcome to become a volunteer with our youth. But God often calls you onward to a deeper pursuit of Himself, on to something different, and in many ways, something more mature... As a youth, you were instructed in the faith. You needed to be spiritually fed so you could grow deeper in your personal relationship with Christ. Now you are a young adult. While you still need to be instructed and spiritually fed (as we all do for the rest of our lives), now you are called to give away what you yourself have been given. Now that you are a young adult, you have a greater responsibility to evangelization and service. Many of the opportunities you'll find at St. Thomas are opportunities for you to evangelize and serve. Now that you are a young adult, St. Thomas needs you to share your time and your gifts with this community. The author of the New Testament letter to the Hebrews talks about this transition in our faith. He explains that when we are young, "we need milk, not solid food... solid food is for the mature..." (Hebrews 5:12,14). Our faith develops in a similar way. I encourage you to embrace this faith transition in your life. To acknowledge the desire God has put in your heart for an even deeper pursuit of Himself. Please prayerfully discern what ministry God is calling you to - be it Youth Ministry or any other ministry in the parish. "Therefore, let us leave behind the basic teaching about Christ and advance to maturity, without laying the foundation all over again..." (Hebrews 6:1) |
